Canada Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is an electronic document that allows eligible citizens from countries that do not require a visa to enter Canada for short-term stays. It is an online process that can be completed from anywhere in the world and requires applicants to fill out an online application form and pay a processing fee.

The eTA was introduced in 2016 to strengthen Canada’s border security and facilitate the entry of low- risk travelers. It is mandatory for citizens of countries that do not require a visa, with a few exceptions, such as US citizens and travelers with a valid Canadian visa.

To apply for an eTA, applicants must provide personal and passport information, such as their name, date of birth, passport number, and expiry date. They also need to answer a few questions related to their health, criminal history, and travel plans.

The application process is straightforward and typically takes only a few minutes to complete. Once the application is submitted, it is processed by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), and most applications are approved within minutes. However, some applications may take longer to process, and applicants are advised to apply at least 72 hours before their scheduled departure.

The cost of an eTA application is CAD $7, which is paid online using a credit or debit card. The eTA is valid for up to five years, or until the expiry date of the passport used to apply for it, whichever comes first. Travelers can use the same eTA for multiple trips to Canada, as long as the eTA and passport remain valid.

It is important to note that an approved eTA does not guarantee entry into Canada. Border officials have the authority to refuse entry to travelers who do not meet the requirements for entry, such as those with a criminal record or who pose a security risk.

In summary, the Canada Electronic Travel Authorization service is an easy and efficient way for eligible travelers to obtain permission to enter Canada for short-term stays. By providing basic personal and passport information, paying a small fee, and answering a few questions, travelers can obtain an eTA that is valid for up to five years and allows multiple entries to Canada.
